Sounds From The Underground: The Finest Gigs In York This Month [April 2017]
Now then. Dan here. Time to see who’s got what on the stove for April in York. Here’s my round up of what’s bubbling. I’ve changed the format a bit since last time, as it’s easier to just post links for you to check out, than listing everything. There’s no point making a list about a list that someone has already made on their website. Wastes my time and means that the website the promoter has put together basically gets no views. So there. Like it or lump it.

2 shows from me for April. The one i’ll gas about a bit is the one on the 29th. Tuppenny Bunters are back, after a brilliant display last year at our little gig. They play anarchic dancehall caberet type stuff. It’s got a lovely dark edge. Husband and wife combo, who both play drums and keyboard respectively. Me and my wife are also going to do a Snakerattlers. Man Fantastic And The Hand Of God are a delightful post-punk band from Leeds, with Jim Osman on vocals, and everyone in York surely knows who Sherbet Flies are. Incase you don’t they are a fuzzy, distorted queerpunk band. It’ll be a lovely gig this.

Once again, Joe’s got a bucket full of gigs for April. He does not mess about. My pick of his bunch is the show he has on the 8th of April at The Fulford Arms. Joe’s got The Orielles, MOM, Fat Spatula and Parker Lee. The Orielles are a young three-piece from Halifax and have just signed to legendary indie label Heavenly Recordings. This band will be very worth seeing. They won’t be playing small venues for long. In support are York’s own Fat Spatula, who we all know by now. Trashy trans-atlantic racket from the skilled local 4 piece. I don’t know an awful lot about MOM or Parker Lee, but you can rest assured that if Joe has them booked, they will be decent. See the full details on Joe’s website.

One For The Road
The lovely editor of this online jazz rag has got a gig under his One For The Road promotion. He’s got Ben Marwood with support from Non Canon, Helen Chambers and Jonny Gill. It’s at The Fulford Arms on 12th April. It’s all acoustic stuff, so if that’s your bag, get down for some solo instrument love. That sounded a bit rude. Cocks and fannies. It’s £7 to get in.

Aaron and his mates put on the best punk gigs in York. On the 7th of April, they are hosting their 7th birthday gig. It’s at The Fulford Arms and features Rising Strike, Fuck With Fire, Almighty Uprisers and Washing Machine Repairman. It’s a bit folky, a bit hardcore, and a bit ska this one. He gives varied lineups from all across the punk genre, but this one for their 7th birthday is a bit of a stonker. Fuck With Fire have been going for donkeys of years and so have Rising Strike. Those two bands alone are DIY royalty. It’ll be well worth a trip out if you’re bobbing around York on a Friday night. Get some punk in your pie hole!

Chris Jones brings us one show in April. It’s Idestroy, Altar Flowers, Red Winter and Bloody Mango. Chris mainly deals in classic punk rock, but he does occasionally put on music that’s a tad more modern. Which is the case for this show. Idestroy describe themselves as “Bristol Grrrl Rockers”. They have a sound that fuses the beautifully brutal riot grrrl style, with twangy rock and roll. They’ve also got punk flavours running through their music. I don’t know an awful lot about the support bands, but Bloody Mango contains none other than Fez’s daughter on lead vocals. Incase you are unaware, Fez was the towering leader of York heroes Surf Sluts. Pretty sure that’s going to be worth a watch, and then you get two extra bands before Idestroy, so this gig seems pretty tempting.

I have just been made aware of a show at The New York Club, which is on Blossom Street. I’ve never been to a gig here before, but have heard it’s name thrown about a few times. This is being hosted by the York band Here Be Theives, and has a very tasty lineup indeed. It’s also to raise money for the homeless, so decent music and it’s for a good cause? You’d be stupid not to go. The lineup is Weather Balloons, who is a one-man ambient noise maker. Here Be Thieves, who do garagey-rock stuff. Wolf Solent, who does trippy-as-fook psychrock. And last but not least, Bull are going to play. This gig is on the 10th.

There’s probably more going on in York in April, and i’ll probably re-visit this list for an edit at some point. But it’s tough putting these together when not everyone gets back to me! If you want a gig mentioning, email me at behindthewhitedoor@gmail.com and i’ll get it added. If you would also like to keep me up to date with any gigs that you are promoting in the future, I will surely mention them in future articles. For now, check out the links in here, check out the bands. There’s only so much I can do. The rest is down to you!
